Lime plastering and rendering

Restoration of external lime render

Restoration of external lime render

Overview

Lime plaster is strong and breathable, and helps to protect a building in a very natural way. Modern alternatives create a waterproof barrier which, when used in old properties, can cause many of the damp problems we get called in to deal with today. Our expertise means we work closely with English Heritage and the National Trust on many important restoration projects.

Internal 3-coat lime plaster

This plaster involves 2 coats of a traditional sand and lime mix backing, with added animal hair or fibre for strength. It is then topped with a final coat of slaked-lime putty and fine sand. We will restore, secure and repair old limework and repair or reinstate lathe and plaster ceilings. We can fix and strap ornate ceilings which are bowing or losing their bond, avoiding the need to remove the whole ceiling.

External lime render

This is a 2-coat sand and lime mix, with a final coat applied to your specification. This finish could be roughcast, harl, smoothcast or ashlar (also known as rough stucco).

Ornate plaster and cornice restoration

Decorative cornice enrichments

Overview

Plaster damage can include damp, fire, flood, trauma and the leaching of salts. We will remove any damaged ornate plasterwork and/or cornice and reinstate any missing detail. We can carry out repairs either on-site or at our workshop, using bespoke moulds or, if appropriate, choosing from our huge range of existing moulds—achieving a seamless finish and invisible repairs.

Decorative ceilings

We specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of ornamental ceilings. Whether from drawings provided or from scratch, we can create or recreate decorative ceilings to suit every budget and any taste, including very fine embellishments and enrichments to traditional plain lathe and plaster ceilings.

Modern fibrous techniques

Contemporary architectural applications and installations often call for decorative ceilings made using modern fibrous techniques. We are able to make these to suit private residences, public buildings and commercial properties.

Plaster moulding

Overview

We have an in-house sculptor and model-maker who creates moulds in clay, wax or rubber, enabling us to cast new cornices, ceiling roses, wall plaques, corbels and column heads, niches, surrounds, coats of arms, logos, family crests, and more. These are produced both for off-the-shelf purchase and for bespoke restoration or interior design purposes. Casts are made using glass-reinforced plaster or jesmonite (a durable resin/aggregate mix suitable for external use), either in situ or at our workshops.

On-site mould-making

For more complex or detailed restoration and repair work, it may be necessary to form the required moulds on-site, using traditional methods such as the running mould (horse and stock). This technique is ideal for traditional run cornice, arches, cornices which need to follow a curved wall or ceiling, domes and lunettes, and ceiling/wall panels and rings.
